For a year now, the Olympic Games have kept the Japanese on the edge of apoplexy. Asia's first Olympiad could be the maraschino cherry on top of Japan's postwar rise to dignity, or it could be a face-losing debacle that could only be matched this year in Philadelphia. The country put on its work clothes, its hard hats and its safety shoes, and no one was excused. The Emperor practiced for weeks in the Imperial Palace to perfect his timing for the opening ceremonies. Tokyo's workingmen were advised to cease and desist from their habit of lounging around the air-conditioned airport in their underwear, and it was trumpeted from Hokkaido to Okinawa that urinating in the streets was now considered gauche Labels: 1964, opening ceremony, Tokyo link 0 commentsSaturday, August 20, 2016 Modern Sprinter, 1936 ConditionsSlightly off-topic for this blog, but this is something I wonder about every four years: How would modern world-class athletes fare using the sports equipment/conditions from past eras -- cinder tracks, wool swimsuits, etc? Someone put it to the test by having Andre De Grasse run a 100 meter sprint on dirt while wearing old-school leather racing spikes. Granted it was a sample size of one and the dirt appeared to be less compacted than that of an actual track, but his 11-second time suggests that Jesse Owens (who won the event in 10.3 seconds in 1936) would be very competitive if he time traveled to 2016. From the Wikipedia entry for the 1948 Summer Games: "The Games opened on 29 July, a brilliantly sunny day. Army bands began playing at 2 pm for the 85,000 spectators in Wembley Stadium. The international and national organisers arrived at 2.35 pm and George VI and Queen Elizabeth, with Queen Mary and other members of the Royal Family, at 2.45 pm. Curtis won the 110 meter high hurdles event in the first modern Olympics games. Sixty years later, he shared some memories of the 1896 Games in this piece for the Atlantic. Curtis and other members of the Boston Athletic Association dominated the track and field events, but swimming was not a strength for the team: For the aquatic events we had on our team a very fast short-distance swimmer, who had won many races in warm American swimming pools. He journeyed to the Piraeus on the day of the first swimming competition blissfully ignorant that even the Mediterranean is bitterly cold in the month of April. "Nobody else [besides the British] really knew the rules," Polley said.link 0 comments Tuesday, July 17, 2012 Vintage Olympic Photo: George Foreman in Mexico City, 1968Many years before the Grill: George Foreman at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
